HIGHWAY PLANNING SURVEYS

The following are include in the highway planning phase
  1. Assessment of road length required for a district, state or country.
  2. Preparation of master plan showing phasing of plan in annual or five years plan.
For assessing road length required, field surveys are carried out to collect the data. The field surveys thus required for collecting the factual data may be called  as planning surveys or fact finding surveys.

The planning surveys consist of the following studies

  • Economical studies.
  • Financial studies.
  • Traffic or road use studies.
  • Engineering studies.
Economical Studies :
  • The various details to be collected are useful in estimating the economics involved in the highway development programme,.
  • Population and it's distribution in each village, town or locality within the area.
  • Trend of population growth.
  • Agricultural and industrial products and their listing in classified groups.
  • Agricultural and industrial development and future trends.
  • Existing facilities with regard to communication, recreation and production etc.
  • Per capita income.
Financial Studies :
  • Financial studies are necessary various aspects like sources of income and the manner in which funds for the projects may be mobilized.
  • Sources of income.
  • Estimated revenue from taxation on road transport.
  • Living standard of people.
  • Resources at local level, toll taxes, vehicle registration and fines.
  • Future trends in financial aspects.
Traffic or road use studies :

Traffic surveys should be carried out in the whole area and on selected routes and location in order to collect the following data.
  • Traffic volumes in vehicles per day, annual average daily traffic, peak and design hourly traffic volume.
  • Origin and destination study.
  • Traffic flow patterns.
  • Mass transportation facilities.
  • Accidents, causes and its cost analysis.
  • Future trend and growth in traffic volume and goods traffic.
  • Growth of passenger trip and the trend in the choice of modes.
Engineering Studies :
  • Topographic surveys.
  • Soil surveys.
  • Location and classification of existing roads.
  • Estimation of possible development in all aspects due to the proposed highway.
  • Road life studies.
  • Traffic studies - origin and destination studied.
  • Special problems in drainage, construction and maintenance of roads.
