ROAD ALIGNMENT

The position of the layout of the center line of the highway on the ground is called alignment.

There are two types of alignment :

1. Horizontal alignment : It includes.
  • Straight Path
  • Curves
  • Horizontal deviators
2. Vertical alignment : It includes.
  • Vertical Curves (Summit curves, Valley curves)
  • Vertical Gradients
The alignment of the road should be carefully decided before the construction of road is started. Improper alignment would result in one or more following disadvantage.
  • Increase in construction cost
  • Increase in maintenance cost
  • Increase in Vehicle operation cost
  • Increase in accident rate.
